The Stiftung Reinbeckhallen welcomes students from MA Performance Design and Practice, a course offered at the University of Arts London: Central Saint Martins, for the second time. During their residency, the students will develop new work and present it at the Reinbeckhallen.

This year’s group of students is comprised of 16 up-and-coming artists from different backgrounds and cultures who work in the areas of performance, design, and the visual arts. Using Faust, a Weimar film directed by F.W. Murnau in 1926, as a starting point, and drawing on their own experiences and interdisciplinary practices, these students will work together on a performance that explores the timeless German folktale as well as the ongoing resonance of Murnau’s unique vision. The residency and final performance are made possible by the support of the Reinbeckhallen and the Stiftung Reinbeckhallen.

From the end of January until the end of March, the Stiftung Reinbeckhallen will welcome the first artist who successfully applied for the 2020 artist residency through its Open Call.

Serkan Sarier, a graduate of The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and Goldsmiths, University London, was one of three artists selected from a large pool of applicants from 14 countries for the 2020 artist residency at the Reinbeckhallen.

The son of a Turkish Gastarbeiter (guest worker), Sarier was born in Germany and spent the past 20 years living and studying abroad. With his return to Germany, he will create a complete body of work – paintings, sculptures, and installations – that will explore at once the theme of rejection and his own search for identity and places of acceptance at a young age.

At the end of his residency, Sarier will present the works created on site at the Reinbeckhallen.

The aim of the Stiftung Reinbeckhallen’s residency program is to help artists, particularly those working in the visual and performing arts, to develop their work by offering them a living/working studio and the support of a professional team. While the Stiftung Reinbeckhallen welcomes and reviews all applications, special consideration is given to those that focus on translocality and transculturalism.

The Spaces and Dates

Successful applicants will be offered a studio (22,5 sqm, ceiling height of 2,56–4 m) in a space (100 sqm) that is shared by other artists, architects, and designers. Each residency period lasts between 8 and 10 weeks and takes place during the following weeks:

January 27th – March 29th, 2020
June 29th – August 23rd, 2020
September 1st – October 25th, 2020

At the end of each residency period, artists will be given a space for the presentation of an exhibition, performance, or similar project, for up to 15 days.

Who Can Apply

The Stiftung Reinbeckhallen residency program is open to artists who reside outside of Germany and work in the visual and performing arts.

Please note that special consideration will be given to LGBTQI+ people, socially disadvantaged individuals, and artists who include printmaking or printing techniques in their practices.

Applications from mothers with small children are welcome and there is no set age limit to apply.

Please provide us with your CV, a letter of intent (up to 500 words), an artist statement (up to 500 words), and a portfolio with a selection of works (max. 5 works, max. 10 MB).

For the requested documents, we ask that you make a folder with your full name containing the files (in PDF format). Please upload it to your own server or a file sharing service (such as WeTransfer or Dropbox) and provide us with the download link.

Results

The final selection of participants will be made by a board comprised of curators, art historians, foundation members, and advisers, and announced by December 15th, 2019.

After several successful co-operations between the Reinbeckhallen and performing artists, the halls will welcome Dimiris Chimonas, a member of Moving the New Artistic Development Program at the Dance House Lemesos.

Dimitris Chimonas’ work understands artistic performances as productions experienced in the theatre. In his work, he explores theatre conventions and theatrical means and formats through their use and misuse. As his host, the Reinbeckhallen will offer the performance artist, an HWP scholarship holder of the Lebanese Association for Fine Arts “Ashkal Alwan” in Beirut, the opportunity to research, rehearse, and exchange ideas with members of the local arts scene for a week. During this period, Chimonas will focus on the content and development of his current production The Only Way Out Is Through.

About this work, Chimonas writes: “Going to the theatre requires that we make an unspoken agreement with ourselves: to dispel any doubts. This ‘clearing up of doubts’, however, requires both the actors and the audience to be willing to temporarily put their own critical skills on hold and to sacrifice logic for the enjoyment of the theatrical experience. By pausing in our seats in the auditorium, we consent to experience life through a rehearsed present moment. We travel through space and time while playing the role of the audience. This unspoken agreement teaches us how to ‘play’ our role.”

At the end of his stay, Dimitris Chimonas will perform in an unconventional setting.

Dimitris Chimonas was born in Cyprus in 1993. He has presented his work in several theatres and exhibition spaces in Cyprus, London, and New York. His work has also been featured on the website of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and at The Benaki Museum (Athens, 2016), the Young Artists Biennale from Europe and the Mediterranean (Tirana, 2017), the Biennale Architettura (Venice, 2018), the Window Laboratoire (Paris, 2018), and the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (2019).
