In the exhibition en détail, Fides Becker (*1962) devotes herself to the quiet poetry of interiors and facades. Her paintings focus on close-ups of old apartments and houses, places where the passage of time has left clear traces. A peeling corner of wallpaper, an antique, almost blind mirror, a fragment of stucco, a worn doorknob or a forgotten chandelier – every motif in Becker’s works appears delicate and almost dreamlike. Her deliberate use of paint, which runs down the canvas like thin rivulets, reinforces the impression that the motifs seem to dissolve and disappear.
Becker has long focused on motifs that are often overlooked or taken for granted in everyday life. With her muted colour palette and thoughtful compositions, she reveals the beauty of the overlooked and forgotten with ease. For the artist, these are not just plain objects; they are fragments of memory that convey a fascinating sense of space that feel both intimate and timeless.
Thanks to her unerring eye for the special in the seemingly ordinary, the artist also succeeds in drawing our attention to detail. With her paintings, she shows us how the discarded, abandoned and neglected can have an enchanting character and draw us in.
After numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad, Becker, who lives and works in Berlin, can be seen for the first time in the Stiftung Reinbeckhallen’s Project Room in a solo exhibition curated by Dr. Sabine Schlenker. Several of her works can be found in the Stiftung’s collection and were included in the group exhibition a touch of playfulness in 2023.
