In 1976, the Cultural Association of the GDR (Kulturbund der DDR) organised an exhibition of images depicting everyday life in the GDR, taken by non-professional photographers. It was presented at the Berlin City Library (Berliner Stadtbibliothek). The exhibition was curated by university lecturer and photographer Arno Fischer, who also mentored the photographers.
Fifty years later, the Stiftung Reinbeckhallen Sammlung für Gegenwartskunst (Collection of Contemporary Art) is presenting the series shown by Klaus Greiner in its original conception and expanding it with previously unpublished works. A mixture of snapshots, reportage and photo essays, the photographs depict people and their environments in East Berlin in the early 1970s
The exhibition titled “Everyday Life in the GDR – Street Photography from the 1970s”, will be open from 17 September to 7 November 2026. It is open Thursday to Sunday, 12 PM to 7 PM at the Reinbeckhallen Artlab.
Entry costs 8€ or 5€ at the concessionary rate.
