Evelyn Bencicova | Immersion

01. – 30.03.2025

Growing up in a high-rise building block, Evelyn Bencicova (b. 1992 in Bratislava, Slovakia) would spend time observing the homes and activities of her neighbours through a pair of binoculars. What these binoculars failed to disclose, the artist imagined, developing narratives about her neighbours’ lives that fused reality and fiction and a creative method that would later serve her well when working alone and in collaboration with other artists.

For the past decade, Bencicova, who is known for working serially, has used photography and new media to explore identity and the role of the individual in post-socialist societies, the replacement of reality with its representation, and the relationship between humans and machines. Spanning both floors of the Reinbeckhallen’s ArtLab, the works in this exhibition – photographic series, audio-visual pieces, and one VR experience – address these and other timely topics.

Presented together with Asymptote, a solo exhibition that takes place at JAEGER ART between February 28 and April 12, 2025, Immersion includes works made by Bencicova between 2016 and 2025 and invites viewers to delve into her thought-provoking, fictional worlds.

Curated by Dr. Candice M. Hamelin, Immersion is part of EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography 2025 and is supported by JAEGER ART.
